Our friends at The Many came to us to help bring the first ever sneaker shrine into the world. While they planned the production of the shrine itself and the release party, we at Oddfellows brought out the paints and got messy.

The result is a :60 second adventure that blends live-action and animation together. We follow Blue the Great as he battles and befriends characters of his own creation, all in a race to build the coveted sneaker shrine.

Animation
It starts with the kicks
You can’t have an animated spot about the creation of a sneaker shrine without sneakers. So we set off to design a cast of kicks that would inhabit the animated world of Blue’s mind. Inspired by some of the most sought-after sneakers in world and an added dash of our own freshness, our designs were nothing short of dope.
Prepping the canvas
Working together with the live-action team and our VFX team, we placed markers and scanned the set using AR technology to make sure we had a digital representation of the set for our 2D FX to live in. These models were used by our 3D artists to help us pre-visualize the paint FX and characters in the live action scenes.
Drawn to life
Even before the filming of the live action shots began we got to work roughing out the entire spot with hand-drawn animation. These roughs laid the foundation of our world, our character performances, and all of our camera moves.
Living in a fantasy
Blue’s signature style was of course our biggest influence when developing our animated world. We wanted to capture everything that made his work his; Unique characters and ghosts, mummified objects, clouds, flowers, and bright primary colors. From there we took inspiration from classic 1920s rubber-hose animation. We not only developed a look that emulated the films of that era, but also made sure to capture the exaggerated animation style and loop-driven movements the animators of that age utilized.

All in a days work
From the moment we walked on set we knew this was going to be a special one. The lighting coming through the windows was immaculate. Breakfast was served. And the plan was laid out for us. Shot by shot, everyone from the robotic camera operator to the gaffers, directors, and PAs all worked in harmony to create this unique sneaker spot.
